EuroGoTV (2007-2022): A Personal Journey and Its End

23 April 2026
From 2007 to 2022, I ran EuroGoTV.com, a website that provided live video coverage of major European Go tournaments. What started as an ambitious project grew into a comprehensive platform with various features for the European Go community.

What EuroGoTV was (2007-2022)

EuroGoTV provided live video coverage of major Go tournaments across Europe. The website included:

The impact of COVID-19

When COVID-19 hit, live tournaments simply ceased to exist. There were no events to broadcast, no tournaments to report on. The entire foundation of what EuroGoTV offered disappeared overnight. After the restrictions were lifted, the demand for my services decreased and I decided to take a permanent job.

Personal setbacks

In October 2022, I suffered a thrombosis in my right eye and a week later a stroke. Since then, I have had no income and my life has taken a completely different turn.

Technical setback

Several technical problems came together during the same period. Judith and I had moved to the heart of France (Haute-Vienne) in search of a new start. At the same time, the server in Germany was undergoing a transition from SQL to PDO - a necessary modernization that did not go smoothly.

The worst part was that our private photo server, with all 50,000+ photos, was corrupted. Years of Go history and thousands of captured moments were potentially lost forever.

Where things stand now

EuroGoTV has been offline ever since. What was once an active community platform is now a lingering memory of a different time.

Moving forward

I have no plans to revive EuroGoTV. These days I’m back to playing chess – not as strong as I was in my twenties and thirties, but I enjoy it. Life has taken a different turn.

The photos, if I can find them, will be moved to Judith’s website jujuphoto.eu, where they can find a good home.

A final note

This blog post serves as a record of what EuroGoTV was and why it ended. Sometimes projects come to an end, circumstances change and it is time to close a chapter and move on to the next.

To those who were part of the EuroGoTV community during the active years: thank you for being part of the journey.

Hi Harry,
I’ve often wondered what happened to EuroGoTV and was really pleased to finally come across this blog post. It’s such a shame the site had to end. I thoroughly enjoyed the tournament coverage, the lectures, your sessions with Murugandi, and the obvious enthusiasm you brought to everything. The Go world definitely feels poorer without EuroGoTV in it.
I’m very sorry to hear about the difficult times you went through with COVID, your health challenges and the technical problems. That’s a lot to contend with but it’s good to hear you’re back to playing chess though.
I also parked Go for quite a while, but I’ve recently come back to it with fresh energy. I hope the same happens for you one day as it really is a fantastic game.
Thank you for all the years of effort you put into EuroGoTV. It meant a lot to many of us.
Best wishes,
Darius
