Jan Simara (European Champion 2012) - one more interview
Q. Was it the first time you beat Ilya Shikshin? I know you played him before in the Insei League on KGS (Ilya was one of the teachers) and in friendship games on Go servers
A. We played already about 4 or 5 games in real tournaments. And this was my first win, but i had good chances already in second game when i was 4-dan (last european Ing cup i think). I beat him few times on KGS, but these are just internet games.
Q. I think, you won the final game, because it was peaceful and Ilya is not as good at peaceful games, as in fighting.
A. Well, if im good at some part of Go, its fighting as well :). So i dont think I won because we didnt fight much. If u see our first game in main (7th round) u wouldnt propably had this opinion. It was very agressive game by both sides and i felt, fighting was equal (in the end he was dead but i didnt realized i had extra liberty in about 8 moves short variation so i was who died). I think i won because generally he was in bad shape and i was in good one.
Q. I feel that the final pairing was very comfortable for you. Ilya played with Surma and Debarre. You played with Burzo and Lisy. Do you think so too?
A. My score with Cornel was 1:8 at the moment (i won with him only once in china, in team tournament) and Pavol Lisy is young super dangerous prodigy who knows me very well, which means its even more dangerous, so i really doubt it was personally good pairing for me :)
Q. What do you think about my proposal: Let the #1 after the preliminary choose the opponent for 1/8, so he can choose the weakest partner. #2 will have the second choice and so on.
A.This is good idea i think. But mainly they shouldnt try to avoid pairings of players who already played in main. Thats the most stupid stuff in this system, because its clear that many of them already played (there isnt 200 players who fight for top 8...) and KO is just new tournament.
Q. I saw that you played lot of offline tournaments during the last few years. Do they help you to improve your Go? Please describe other ways you study Go
A. I like to play offline tournaments so i visit them quite often. But im really not one who can judge if i improved or not :)
Sometimes i replay top pro games, and time to time i open a tsumego book, but in last years, i didnt study seriously at all. I would like to , but at my age, its already worth to study something what I can use in real job :/. I really hope that can be changed by some new european pro system!
Q.What do you think about your chances of defending the title in 2013?
A. Haha, Im sorry but cannot answer this question. I never count chances and these kind of stuffs. I will just come and try my best again :).
